Series Work - Present a series of four pieces
This series explores body image in concept and volume representation in technical skill. I wanted to explore how to create and represent shape without “drawing it. The figures are all women’s bodies because I feel that body shape is a constant topic of advertisement and conversation and I personally feel overwhelmed by it. The shapes are represented by geometric shapes next to them which reference a certain ideology of women’s bodies being shaped like other things, like an hourglass or a rectangle. I have the hourglass represented here but I also wanted to represent other shapes that aren’t typical in that normal lineup because it objectifies my subjects further, which enhances my message of women feeling the need to compare themselves to unrealistic standards.
This is one of the pieces I’m most proud of but also took the most work. I explored a lot in my in my preliminary work and landed on this concept. I feel happy with how these pieces turned out and want to do more with this technique in the future.

Process as Concept - create a drawing that represents process.
I created this drawing based on my process of doodling and the tendency to “wing-it” when it comes to my art. I started with a random shape which is the general silhouette of the man in the drawing, then doodled the details and purposefully left some of the rough sketch lines in. I pushed it further by adding color and detail, like the Pledge of Allegiance as rain repeating vertically in the background. This drawing was made in January 2025 and represents a specific person, but also a vague generalized type of person who doesn’t care about how their actions affect millions of people.
This was my first drawing that I made in this class, and this class was the first drawing class I’d taken since 2013. I consider drawing to be my weakest skill - both technically and also creatively - but I’m pretty happy with how this turned out. I think it represents me as an artist and I’m proud of the detail.

Meaning as Concept - draw something that represents meaning
In order to explore how to represent meaning through visual mediums I chose to explore my feeling of being a 30 year old (at that time) in college. This piece represents the negative things my brain tells me, but how attending classes in order to finally finish my degree will help me see past my own self imposed limitations and move toward the life that I’d like to be living. I want this drawing to represent that sometimes you bring future can feel far away but looking toward something can be powerful enough to get you through your seemingly dark present.
I didn’t receive a super great grade on this piece but I do feel happy with it. I know I could have developed this more. I also recognize that this pieces feels more lik a painting than a drawing, but I like it like that.
